i.UCC new virtual community for Christians
Spiritual seekers can now find a new "virtual community" offering online worship experiences, Bible study, pastoral care and instruction in UCC basics. The community (at i.ucc.org) is not a congregation, says the Rev. David Schoen of the UCC's evangelism ministry, but will give seekers a chance to "test" the UCC if they're not quite ready to visit a local church. The community will also provide a "spiritual space" for potential members who live in areas where there is no existing UCC congregation, he said.
"What happens if the nearest UCC church is 50 miles away, as some seekers have told us?" Schoen said. "Rather than lose contact, a virtual community helps us create relationships that offer at least some of the experience of church: the chance to pray with others, to share and learn faith, to learn about the UCC and its rich history and traditions."
Naturally, seekers are encouraged to consider membership in a local congregation. But this virtual community could serve as a gateway--a transition that leads to membership in a congregation.
"Like a traditional congregation, a virtual community cannot succeed without the leadership of ordained and lay ministers," says Andy Lang, a consultant who is developing i.UCC. "There is no church without ministries of service, care and education," he said. The Rev. Lisa Hart of Union Congregational Church in Green River, Wyoming, is one of eight ordained UCC ministers whom have been trained as "i.Guides" for the community, he said, and others will join the ministry team in the next few months.
The virtual community project is sponsored by the Congregational Vitality Initiative of the UCC's Local Church Ministries.
